MONUMENT NO. 1030427

DESCRIPTION + /

The probable site of the 16th century Great Stables of Nonsuch Palace. The site was identified by Dent from a field name `Old Stable Ground' on a map of 1731. He also records finds including 16th century pottery, tile, and building rubble `in a corner of this field'. An archaeological survey carried out by RCHME field staff between 1993-95 identified slight earthworks, which might be associated with the building, in the vicinity of the copse at the centre of the field. However, the field had been intensively ploughed and the evidence was inconclusive.
