Later prehistoric enclosure on Raddon Hill. Evaluation excavations were undertaken in 1994 by the Exeter Museum Archaeological Field Unit and the cropmarks transcribed and analysed by RCHME in 1997, the latter as part of the Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project (see SS 80 SE 67 for details of the causewayed enclosure). A sequence of enclosures, some featuring palisades, appears to belong to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age on the basis of pottery from their enclosing ditches and palisade trenches. Associated features include pits and post holes.

SS 8855 0313 (FCE) A rapid examination of air photography (1a) suggests the presence of a univallate hillfort, of Prehistoric date, visible as cropmarks (south half) and low earthworks (north half) around the 214m hill c.400m west of Raddon Top. The hillfort measures c.300m x 100m and comprizes an elongated ovoid shape with an inner division (or external annex) at its southwest end and a smaller oval enclosure within the main enclosure.
The extreme southwest end appears to have a palisade trench within, while other parts of the main enclosure circuit have indications of a rampart behind the ditch.
The main enclosure ditch is apparently double at SS 8858 0308, possibly indicating a protected entrance ( a double ditch approaching this point may be a trackway but seems more likely to be an old hedgeline). (1)

This enclosure was mapped at 1:2500 scale by the Aerial Survey section of RCHME in February/March 1997 as part of the Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project. Archaeological evaluation excavations were carried out on the site in 1994 by the Exeter Museums Archaelogical Field Unit and the results of this field work showed that rather than being a single phased monument, the site had undergone three separate phases of construction in the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age.(2a) The later Prehistoric hillfort is elongated oval in shape and at least 245m by 110m in size. It is enclosed by a ditch up to 8m wide which from the excavations is known to be V-shaped in profile. The remains of an internal bank is visible as both cropmarks and earthworks on the photographs.
