THE BAGE

DESCRIPTION + /

Earthwork remains of a Motte. The motte is 3 to 4 metres in height and is situated on a promontory, the highest, narrowest point on the Golden Valley. There are traces of a possible ditch on the north east side. The motte was probably created by cutting this ditch across the natural spur of land and using the excavated material to create a motte on the isolated section. A railway embankment has cut into the north west side which has destroyed any evidence for a possible bailey which would seem most likely on this rasied plateau of land. The small pool to the south is man-made and was created in 1977.
The summit of the motte consists of only 27m square, and reaches a maximum height of 6.23m on the south-west side where it takes adavntage of the natural lie of the land. There is no firm documentary evidence for a fortified site at this location.
Scheduled.
