DORE ABBEY

DESCRIPTION + /

The Cistercian Dore Abbey was founded in 1147 by a grandson of the Conqueror, Robert of Ewyas and was dissolved in 1537. The Church of St Mary dates to the late 12th to early 13th century and was restored as a parish church in 1633 for John, Viscount Scudamore with woodwork by John Abel. The church was restored again between 1895 to 1904 by RW Paul. It is built of sandstone rubble and ashlar with limestone dressings under a stone slate roof. Further remains of the abbey include the fragmentary remains of the circa 1280 chapter house.
