OLD COURT MOUND

DESCRIPTION + /

A medieval moated site, known as Old Court Mound, and an adjacent pond, located on a hillside overlooking the River Wye, 65 metres north of Old Court House. The square moat island measures 30 metres by 30 metres. It is raised around 1.2 metres above the ground to the south and east, and about 0.5 metres above that to the north. There are mounds up to 0.5 metres high at the corners of the island. Building stone is visible on the island and the remains of a stone wall running east to west were recorded in 1985. The moat measures up to 10 metres wide and 3 metres deep, and is dry, though it does fill when the Wye is in severe flood. The northern arm is formed by the utilisation of the adjacent stream and pond and is up to 5 metres deep. It seems that the pond and moat were filled by damming downstream of the moat, though no evidence of a dam is now visible. Immediately north of the island is a shallow pond, formed by enlarging the natural stream bed. It measures approximately 200 metres long and 25 metres wide, with its eastern end in line with the eastern end of the moat. Scheduled.
