The monument includes the earthwork and buried remains of a motte castle, situated on a low ridge just south of the main road through the village of King's Caple. The earthern motte mound is circular in plan, with a diameter of 35m, and is between 2.5 and 3.5 metres in height. Its low, flat top may suggest an earlier pallisade or shell keep on the motte summit, and there would have been ample room for structures. The castle is situated alongside an earlier Roman road. To the west of a motte, partly encased by the degraded rampart, are the remains of a stone well. Scheduled.

SO 5593 2880 Caple Tump (NR). (1)

Caple Tump is c44 ft in diameter and rises 12 ft above the ground on the W. There is a level sinking in the top of the mound. (Note RCHM use form 'Capel' for parish name also). (2-3)

A motte situated upon the top of a low ridge with a diameter of 40.0m and a height increasing from 2.5m on the S side to 3.5m on the N side. There are remains of a bank around the flat summit 4.0m to 6.0m in width and 0.5 to 1.2m in height. It has been lately levelled in two places. A third break on the W side may be orginal. A depression on the SE side may be part of a ditch formerly encircling the motte.
