DESCRIPTION

A 14th century fortified tower house with 17th and 19th century alterations, partially overlying the earthwork remains of a moat. Two storey tower, built of sandstone, with battlemented parapets. Granted a licence for a chapel in 1354.

[NY 4603 2648] Dacre Castle [NR] (1)

Dacre Castle, almost entirely 14th cent. but traces of earlier work in the west wall. The general lay-out is that of a mediaeval pele tower but with projecting towers at each angle. Restored 17th cent. Three sides of the moat still remain. (2-3)

Apart from recent minor renovations, the castle survives as described above and is occupied: see G.Ps. AO 66/193/7 and 8. The part-filled in moat has the remains of a fishpond along its south side.

Dacre Castle, Medieval keep surrounded by traces of moat, with moat in process of extensive repair in 1963, intended for private occupation. Rectangular block of stone walls about 7 ft. thick, with corner turrets alternately diagonal and square to wall face. Entrance doorway on first floor, with pointed arch, up flight of stone steps. Large hall has arched fireplace and side oven, and trefoiled piscina. King post roof now being ceiled. Vaulted cellars. Spiral stone stair with stone newel and vaulted top. Upper room with fireplace. Stone corbels support moulded timber beams of upper floor. Moat at present (1963) a muddy ditch. Exclude farm buildings.

The large windows at Dacre Castle with mullion and transom crosses are dated circa 1700. in 1354 a licence for a chapel in the castle was granted. (7)

Earthwork remains of a moat; the sub-rectangular island, which contains Dacre Castle on its east side, is surrounded by a waterlogged moat except on its east side. On the west and south sides the moat is flanked by an external bank up to 9m wide and 1m high; beyond on this on the south and southwest sides is a second parallel bank of similar size with a dry ditch separating the two banks.
