NEWNHAM CASTLE

A Norman ringwork castle earthwork with a maximum length of 190 feet, and traces of a bank on the north west and south sides. The castle was presumably in existence by 1086 and was referred to as the 'old castle' in the 12th century and similarly in circa 1240 and 1418. The site was excavated in the 19th century but never published.
