DESCRIPTION

The gatehouse was first built circa 1300-35 and was completed after licence to crenellate had been obtained in 1368-69. A restoration took place during the 19th century. It is of sandstone and comprises a single storey structure over an arched gateway, with an embattled octagonal tower set into each corner.

Edgar Tower. Built for King John c 1204, probably originally the
entrance to the castle, which afterwards became the main gate of the monastery. A single-storey over arched gateway of two bays with groined vault and an embattled octagonal tower each side. Modern canopied niches with modern human figures. Restored.

A massive and picturesque gate-house. Grade I (2-3).
