DESCRIPTION

Earthwork remains of a moated enclosure, possibly the site of a fortified manor house. The earthworks of a possible fishpond lie immediately south east of the moat. Both the moat and the fishpond are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP.

In a marshy field about 40 yds east of the church is an ancient
earthwork about 100 yards long x 40 to 50 yards wide, rounded at the SE corner, and formerly surrounded by a fosse now filled up. "An occupation road has probably run through the north-west end where it narrowed". (2)

The remains of a sub-rectangular moated enclosure best preserved on the north east side where the ditch, now dry, is 6m wide and 0.7m deep. Elsewhere it is extensively mutilated and virtually obliterate in the north west. There are no internal remains. To the immediate south east there is a possible fish pond.
The work has no great strength, but may represent the site of a fortified manor house from which the name 'Castle Carrock' was derived. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

Both the moat and the fishpond are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP. The moat appears as a dry ditch enclosing an area 76.3 metres by 51 metres. To the south east lies a dry ditch 35 metres by 2.7 metres, flanked by earthwork banks on the north west and south east, which is probably the fishpond noted by authority 3. (5-6)
