DESCRIPTION

House of mid-16th century date, originally incorporating a 14th century pele tower which was demolished c.1750. It was altered in the 19th century. Two storeyed and T-shaped in plan, built of stone rubble with slate roofs. It stands on a moated site.

(NY 620148) Crosby Hall (NR). (1)

A pele tower was erected here c 1350 and the Manor House was added some 200 years later. The ruins of the tower were pulled down c1750 (2). The building was Gothicized in the 19th c (3). The courtyard of the present Hall is on the site of the ancient Grange (2). The moat forms a polygonal island, but the E arm and part of the SE arm have been filled in. There are traces of an outer bank on the NW and SW and of an inner bank near the N angle (4). The hall has been modernised to a large extent and is not outstanding. (See photograph). Of the moat surrounding the hall only the west side and parts of the north and south arms are now extant. It is partially water filled and averages 10.0m in width and 1m in depth. (2-4)

NY 62041481. Observation of development and levelling operations within the moated area, 30m south west of the hall have revealed no structural features or occupation debris of medieval or earlier date. (6)
