An earth bulwark was built at St Osyth in 1543. One of seven built to protect the Essex coast, it was of earthen construction with a drawbridge. Each bulwark had a captain, a lieutenant, a porter, two soldiers, and between three and six gunners. In 1552 it was decided to discontinue the garrisons.
