During the Tudor perod, Dunwich had defensive entrenchments. Although provided with seven pieces of ordnance in 1569, a survey of 1586 found that the guns had been neglected nad not even been mounted. Even in the 17th century, a survey showed Dunwich to possess two unuasable guns.
