DESCRIPTION

A group of former bastle houses, now converted to outbuildings and surviving as roofed buildings. All built of stone rubble, most with slate roofs and all dating from the 16th or early 17th century, some with 18th/19th century alterations.

An old cottage at Chesterwood incorporates what was probably the east wall of a pele tower. (1)

The wall forms the western end of the 18th/19th C cottage at NY 8296 6514, and is obviously the only remains of a much earlier building. The cottage is known as "The Old Pele House". See Ground Photograph Ao 56/350/8. (2)

NY 829651 A group of 5 houses built as bastles or in the bastle tradition (See Type-site NY 88 SE 14).

The buildings stand around a green which opens off the west side of the road. The following buildings all appear to have been built as bastles:

i) To the SE is a small two-storeyed building measuring 27 feet by 22 feet externally. Now used as a farm store.
ii) A second two-storey building to the W measuring 29 feet by 22 feet
iii) To the NW is a long building now of one lofty storey only and used as a farm store. It is divided in two by a cross-wall which originally formed the E end wall of the W part. The E part was built later.
iv) N of the green and E of the last building is a two-storeyed house measuring 27 feet by 21 feet with wallls 3-4 feet thick.
v) E of the last building and separated from it by a later house, a building with walls 3 feet thick. (3)

'The Golf House' outbuilding. Grade II. Bastle house, now outbuilding. C16 or early C17.

House adjoining west end of Mellom Cottage. Grade II. Bastle house, C16 or early C17 altered C18 and C19.

Building 10m west of house adjoining west end of Mellom Cottage. Grade II. Outbuilding, formerly a pair of bastle houses, reduced in height. C16 or early C17. An example of 'terraced' bastles, which at one time probably made up the whole of Chesterwood.
Outbuilding to south-east of green. Grade II. Bastle house, now
outbuilding, C16 or early C17. (5)
