DESCRIPTION

Earthwork remains of a mutilated motte and bailey. The site, previously thought to be a moated enclosure was excavated in 1961. A collection of 14th century pottery was found. The site is scheduled.

ST 32844932 (3) A previously unpublished moated enclosure at Edithmead, near Burnham, was excavated by the Burnham-on-Sea Arch. & N.H.S. An occupation level with c. 14th c. pottery was found below the turf. Much of the central mound has been quarried away (2). (1-3)

An irregular moated enclosure with the material from the ditch used to raise the level of the interior, centred at ST 3286 4932. Soil from the interior was used by the farmer's grandfather to level
the adjoining orchard. Mr. Miles (a) says that the'excavation' was merely a rectangular pit, 8 ft. by 6 ft. and 4 ft. deep, dug into the central area. 13th/14th century pottery was found and is in his
possession. The excavators reached no conclusion as to the purpose of the site. It looks more like a mutilated motte than a homestead moat. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

The work is now considered to be probably a denuded motte and bailey (5)
