Ilchester was a walled borough in Anglo-Saxon and Norman times and the second largest town in the county. Mentioned in 1086 and granted a charter in 1204. The defences are of Roman origin.

Post-Conquest Ilchester
Ilchester in Anglo-Saxon and Norman times was a walled borough and
the second largest town in the county. There were, at the Domesday
survey, 107 burgesses in Ilchester, 178 in Bath and 64 in Taunton.

Ilchester is mentioned in 1086 when it has 107 burgesses paying the king 20s. In 1204 a charter of King John confirmed a lost charter of HenryII, which granted to the burgesses all the customs of Winchester. (2)
