DESCRIPTION

Fortified house or bastle, probably of late 16th century date. Built of sandstone rubble with stone-flag and Welsh slate roofs. Originally two storeys, now a three storeyed dwelling with extensions to either end.

(NZ 07443854) Baal Hill House (NR) (1)

Baal or Bale Hill House. Probably once a pele tower now a three-storeyed dwelling with stone walls. 14th century stone vault inside. Grade II (2)

NZ 07443854. The name now in use for the building is Baal Hill Farm (a). It is a fortified house constructed of rubble masonry. It has been much altered and apparently a new storey has been added. A step in the north wall, about 4.5m above ground level probably marks the original height. Two blocked-up rectangular windows are visible in the east gable wall. The comparative slightness of the walls and the construction generally indicate it to have been a defended house rather than a pele. (3)

Condition unchanged. The height of the building suggests that it was more likely a tower than a bastle. (4)

Baal Hill House, near Wolsingham, and ......... are superior to
bastles in their accommodation and in the quality of their
architectural details. They appear too, to be earlier in date and the ground floor may have been used for nothing more than storage. (5)
