A Royal House is implied by the mention of a royal demesne manor at Alveston in 1086. It had a prak which was the only afforested area between Gloucester and Bristol before the accession of Henry II. It was while staying here that William II fell ill in 1193. henrey I dated charters from Alveston, but although popular with the Norman Kings, it was not used by the Angevins. Nothing is known of its architecural history. (1)
