DESCRIPTION

A roughly pentagonal moated castle built, without licence in 1229, with round towers and a twin-tower gatehouse which may well be later. From about 1330 the castle was much altered by the addition of a large square corner tower, a domestic block associated with it and a smaller square tower, the latter of 15th century date. The domestic range to the south was added later, probably in the early 17th century, and remodelled circa 1691. The bridge and possibly the gazebo were built in the 18th century. There are two barns on the site.

Beverston Castle, built circa 1225, was added to in about 1360. There is a 14th century chapel in the SW tower. The foundations of a circular tower 24ft in diameter were discovered in 1873 in the rectory garden, outside the castle moat. Adjacent are two 14th century barns and one of them, called Pilgrim's Barn, is scheduled. The house on the site dates from about 1791. (2-4)

Beverston Castle still stands three stories high and is in a good state of preservation.

Beverston Castle remains are those of a castle of c.1225, probably quadrangular, with large drum towers at the angles, which in the 14th century was improved and provided with a new gatehouse to the east. The surviving portions are the west range and the north part of the gatehouse. The present 17th century house occupies the site of the 13th century hall in the south range. A moat formerly surrounded the whole castle but now only survives to the west. The castle was
besieged twice in 1644 and eventually captured by the Parliamentarians. At the west end of the terrace is a small 18th century gazebo standing on the edge of the moat and surmounted by a pyramidal roof. A 14th century stone barn of 5 bays with three upper cruck trusses surviving lies to the east (see Illustration Card). There is also a fine, but much later seven bay barn. (6-7)

Beverston Castle south elevation has a 17th century 2-storeyed house built of rubble with a Cotswold stone roof. There is a gazebo by the moat with an 18th century bridge. Beverston Castle including gazebo and bridge, grade 1. Beverston Castle Barns, grade 2. (8)

ST 862 940. An area of medieval floor tiles (1.30m by 0.65m) was found in a 14th century tower room of the castle in 1983. These lay 30mm below a later flagstone floor and probably dated from the 14th century. (12)

ST 86169395. Ruined castle and adjoining house with small gazebo on south side on edge of moat with bridge. Built as a fortified manor house circa 1225. Listed Grade I. (13)
