DESCRIPTION

Site of 13th century manor house and its associated chapel, prison and conduit house. Two fishponds survive as earthworks. Fragments of the probable gatehouse for the manor survive in the post-medieval listed building of Vastern Manor House (Listed Building number 316852).

A Manor at `Fasterne' is known to have been in existence in the time
of Edward II (1307-1327). By 1887 the visible remains of the
original house consisted of some of the foundations, thick
walling, a Tudor doorway and, in a chamber on the 1st floor, a
stone chimney-piece and fire place (2).

A licence was granted by the Pope in 1256 to John Despencer to
have a chapel on his estate, this may possibly have been
Fasterne. Both the manor and chapel are mentioned in 1431.(4).
An ancient chapel and prison formerly connected with the
manor were situated immediately north of the house.

The Conduit House, about 10 chains N.W. of the manor house is
said to have supplied it with water, and "The Wilderness" is
the site of two fish-ponds (3). (2-4)

Vastern Manor is of considerable historical interests but is
not architecturally outstanding. See GP.

There are no indications of either the prison, chapel or
conduit house.

In "The Wilderness" is a large fish-pond at SU05078163 with an
area of marsh to the N.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

The original authority for the publication of Vastern Manor,
Fishponds, Conduit House, Chapel and Prison sites was J.W.
Parsons who gave no documentary supporting evidence. (5)

The post-medieval manor house is probably a fragment of the gatehouse of the medieval manor. (6)
