Salisbury's town defences comprised an earthern rampart and ditch. The ditch was dug in 1310 and all the defences completed about 1388. The rampart extended from St Martin's Church to St Ann Street, along Rampart Road to Winchester Street, across the Greencroft to St Edmunds College and on to the River Avon at Castle Street. Entrances through the defences were present in Castle Street, Winchester Street and St Ann's Street, these were demolished in 1771 and 1784.

City Rampart [G.T.]. (1)

City Rampart. The citizens never took advantage of royal permission
to fortify with a stone wall, but contended themselves with the
protection of a rampart with a broad, dry ditch perhaps having a line
of palisading on the inner side. This defence work ran from the River
Avon at the back of Castle Street, to the lower part of the same
stream at Bugmore, with barres stretched across certain roads at
night. The defence work appears to have been completed about 1388. (2)

City Rampart. In 1310 a ditch was dug to enclose the city this was
fortified with an earthen rampart. The rampart ran from St. Martin's
Church to St. Ann Street, thence along Rampart Road to Winchester
Street, across Green Croft to St. Edmund's College and so to the Avon
at Castle Street. (3)

City Rampart. The position of the course of and the remains of the
city rampart is shown on the O.S. 1/2500.

A-B (41/1430/3838 - 41/1430/7548). Course of. No remains are visible
along this section which is mainly built over.

B-C (41/1430/7548 - 41/1430/7839). A very fragmentary tree and shrub
covered portion of the rampart remains. Correct as shown on O.S.
1/2500.

C-D (41/1430/7839 - 41/1430/8033). Course of. No remains are visible
along this section.

D-E (41/1430/8033 - 41/1430/8032). A very fragmentary tree and shrub
covered portion of the rampart remains. Correct as shown on O.S.
1/2500.

E-F. (41/1430/8032 - 41/1429/8858). Course of. No remains are visible
along this section which is mainly built over. (4)

Castle Gate [G.T.] (Site of). (5)

Castle Street Gate. The "barre" in Castle St. was superseded
by a gate early in the 15th century.

The Castle St. Gate was pulled down in 1784 and a fragment of the
stonework, with the Royal Arms upon it, has been let into the wall in
Castle Street near where the Gate stood.

These aims were set up in 1660 after the Restoration. (1)

No visible remains demarcate the site. On the wall which bounds the
western side of Castle Street and near Hussey's Almhouses is a plaque
which reads:-
Castle gate and West Buttress were removed in 1788, and East Buttress
in 1906. R.M. Hall. Mayor. (4)

Milford Barrys. In 1485 this Gate was known as Milford Barrys. (2)

Gate (Site of). This site is now occupied by the eastern extremity of
Milford Street. (4)

Site of WINCHESTER GATE [G.T.] (5)

Winchester Gate.

The "barre" in Winchester St. was superseded by a gate early in the
15th century.

The Winchester St. gate was removed in 1771 as it was an obstruction
to growing traffic. (2)

Field investigations could reveal no authority to site the position
of the Winchester Gate. It stood approx. at the junction of
Winchester St. and Rampart Road. (7)

Martyns Barrys.

In 1485 this Gate was known as Martyns Barrys. (2)

Gate (Site of). This site is now occupied by the eastern extremity of
St Anne's Street. (4)
