DESCRIPTION

A medieval ringwork and bailey located within Place Wood. The ringwork comprises a roughly circular earthwork platform enclosed by a bank and outer ditch. The bailey abuts it to the east and is also enclosed by a bank and outer ditch. The site is thought to date to the 11th or 12th century. Scheduled.

(Centred at SU 63550918) Earthworks (Roman Remains found) (TI). (1)

Circular ring with bank and a sitrrup-shaped bailey. Banks and ditches perfect everywhere except that the bailey ditch is lost in the park and the bank ill-defined in the keeper's garden. No flints or foundations. No entrance to be made out, but its position should be in the keeper's garden. A perfect little specimen of its kind. (2)

(Haverfield's only knowledge of Roman remains found here is the OS published entry. (3) The original ONB is destroyed). (2-3)

A ring-and-bailey as described. In very good condition.

SU 6355 9017. A medieval ringwork and bailey located within Place Wood. The ringwork comprises a roughly circular earthwork platform enclosed by a bank and outer ditch. The bailey abuts it to the east and is also enclosed by a bank and outer ditch. The bailey was originally stirrup shaped but has been cut by a modern ha ha and park boundary ditch and survives as a pentagonal platform. On the western side of the site the bailey defences have been partially destroyed by the construction of a modern park keeper's lodge, now demolished. The foundations of the lodge survive along with a number of associated garden features. The ringwork and bailey is thought to date to the 11th or 12th century. Scheduled. (8)
