DESCRIPTION + /

Medieval moated site at Low Butterby farm, within the grounds of Croxdale Hall, and adjacent chapel site. The moat is dry, and approximately 3 metres deep and 8 metres wide. The sides are lined with stone and brick and the southern arm has been infilled. The moated island is occupied by a farmhouse of 17/early 18th century date, which incorporates some medieval masonry. The medieval moat is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on air photographs.
