A straggling piece of water on the N. of the site of the church
(SU 69 SE 8) and castle (supposed) at Britwell Salome, now both
destroyed, may have enclosed them in its complete form. (2)

The tenants of the land, which belongs to "Britwell Priory",
state that the low rise of ground on which these sites fall, is
known as Castle Hill; but this is probably a corruption of
Chasford Hill; and earlier name; also that to their knowledge
there is no evidence for a castle having existed at Britwell.

The O.S. published siting falls on the N.W. slopes, below the
hill-top, on which is the site of the church. An inspection of
the area, which is wooded and overgrown, was negative.

The `moat' is a natural stretch of water lying in a marshy
hollow at the foot of the hill on the N.E. side, open to the W.
and fed by springs at the head of a gully to the S.E. By reason
of the local topography, water could never have extended
further around the site than it does today.

In conclusion, this site would appear to be of a very dubious nature.
