ELVETHAM HALL

Country house constructed 1859-62 on the site of a medieval manor house which was documented during the mid 16th century and was the home of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. The high Victorian Gothic house was designed by S S Teulon and was extended in 1901 and 1911. The house is built of red brick with stone dressings, bands and decoration in black brick. It has hipped and mansard roofs with gables and dormers. The whole design of the building is extremely varied and ornate. During the First World War the house was used as a hospital.
