DESCRIPTION

House constructed in 1728 with alterations of 1740. It is thought to be constructed on the site of an earlier house or Bishops Palace (medieval). A dovecote within the grounds may be relate to an earlier house. Additions of late 18th, early and late 19th centuries. Walls of brick and stone.

The Bishop's Palace and Manor:

Dogmersfield House possibly stands on the site of the Palace
which, judging from the many documents dated from here by the
Bishops of Bath and Wells, existed in the parish in the 13th
century and possibly earlier.

The earliest reference to a house as such is in 1205 (2-3)

"The present house is mainly 18th century - but is believed to
contain parts of an older house. This older house is supposed
to have replaced the Bishop's Palace in Tudor times but there
is no evidence to support this. (4)

As stated by Col. Wallington the major part of this large
mansion is of early 18th century date, in brick, with rainwater
heads inscribed 1725. No internal evidence of an incorporated
earlier house was seen in a somewhat limited inspection of the
interior. At SU 77175156, however, at the NW corner of the
walled kitchen garden is a pigeon-house or dove-cote, 5.0m.
square, of brick with a tiled roof. The bricks are of the
so-called 'Tudor' tupe which in this area of Hampshire can be
dated as 16/17th century. This building may be associated with
the earlier hosue. No further evidence to establish the exact
site of the Md. Bishop's Palace was gained. (5)
