Batteries, thought to have been emplaced in 1640 on a mound at the north end of Yarm Bridge. No physical evidence found.

In Sept 1640 Colepepper placed two batteries upon a hill close to Yarm Bridge. (1)

(NZ 41891317) The hill referred to by the VCH is probably the large mound 75.0m to the east of the north end of Yarm Bridge. It would be an ideal place for batteries to cover the bridge. There are no traces of any artificial earthworks in the vicinity of this mound nor on air photographs. (2)
