DESCRIPTION

Medieval motte and bailey castle, damaged by landscape gardening. The truncated motte is 52 feet high above the ditch and the bailey is surrounded by a bank 6 feet in height. The ditch surrounding the motte and bailey is 50 feet wide. Although mutilated most of these features were present during field investigation in 1965 and are visible as earthworks on air photographs. Scheduled.

SK 484 999. Castle Hill [G.T.]. (1)

Castle Hill - Motte and Bailey Castle. The truncated motte is 52 feet high above the ditch and the bailey surrounded by a bank of six feet average height. The ditch which surrounds both motte and bailey is 50 feet wide. On the N.W. side there is a small half-moon annexe, possibly part of a defended approach or barbican. Scheduled. (2-4)

The motte and bailey forms part of a public park, and although landscape gardening has obliterated parts of the earthwork and mutilated others, the main characteristic still survive. Published

A medieval motte and bailey are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at SK 4847 9990.

The motte measures approximately 43m in diameter. To the north-east lies the bailey. The bailey is formed by a broad bank with an average width of approximately 17m and encloses an area of around 0.1ha.

The bailey ditch and annexe noted by authority 2, above, were not identifiable on the photographs available.
