DESCRIPTION

House, built circa 1700 on a moated site, and incorporating part of a curtain wall constructed circa 1300. The present house is two-storeyed and brick-built with tiled roofs and was altered in the mid 19th century. Its rear and left return walls incorporate part of the crenellated curtain wall associated with an earlier hall. Also associated with this hall is the gatehouse, built circa 1500 and altered circa 1600. Built of limestone rubble, it was partly demolished circa 1830-40 and adapted as a garden feature.

Remains of the early 15th century Rushall Hall consists of a
substantial section of crenellated wall and an intact gatehouse with angle staircase. Gde II. The present Rushall Hall (19th century) incorporates slight remains of the old hall. (2)

The homestead moat at Rushall Hall consists of one side and angles, now dry, with outside dimensions of 300 x 100 x 210 feet. (3)

Traces in the meadow to the N of the house, of the E, S and
remainder of the W arms of the moat give it approximate
measurements of 70.0m E-W by 37.0m N-S. The N arm now dry and under grass, is 9.0m in width and 0.7m in depth. There are remains of an outer retaining bank on this side. Rushall Hall - no change, as described above. Published 1:1250 survey revised. (4)

Rushall. A moated and fortified manor, with crenellated stone gatehouse, built temp Henry VI (?) garrisoned during the Civil War. (5)

No change since report of 19 8 74. Revised 1:1250 AM survey still correct. MSD revised. (6)

Summary report on excavations carried out in 1980 at the gatehouse. (7)

Detailed report on excavations and structural survey of the gatehouse carried out in 1980 prior to restoration work, revealed that the gatehouse was a 16th century addition to a curtain wall of c1300. The gatehouse was partially demolished in the early 19th century and the ruins subsequently adapted as a garden feature in the 'gothick' tradition. (8)

Gatehouse and curtain walls at Rushall Hall (formerly listed as ruins of Rushall Hall). Curtain walls of c1300 with gatehouse of c1500, incorporating gateway of c1300 with second floor added and windows altered c1600, partly demolished c1830-40. Listed grade II*. [See DoE list for details]. (12)
