DESCRIPTION

Trapezoidal Mediaeval moat, altered in the Post-Mediaeval, possibly during the Civil War, with evidence of turrets in the angles. The island tapers from 80m to 60m and is 75m wide. The steep-sided moat is between 12m and 18m wide , up tp 2.0m deep, and dry. The level interior is surrounded on all but the North-West side by a rampart, between 8m and 10m wide and up tp 1.5m high. At each corner the rampart splays outwards forming platforms which may have provided gun emplacements.

[TF 4272 8213] Castle Hill. (1)

Castle Hill, a large square-moated area with evidence of turrets in the angles. Said to be the site of the seat of the Fitzwilliam family. Scheduled. (2-4)

A strong defensive earthwork, probably of the Civil War period.
Similar sites have been investigated in the Newark (Notts) area and at Welbeck Hill (TA 2104) in this county. Resurveyed at 1:2500.
There is no structural evidence of turrets but the rampart corners are spread suggesting possible gun platforms. (5)

The "large moated area" referred to by the previous authorities was visible as earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The moat is almost square, measures 60m by 60m internally, and is defined by a substantial ditch with an inner bank. It is centred at TF 4272 8213. No entrances turrets or internal features were visible. It was not possible to ascertain if the moat was Medieval or Post Medieval from the air photographs. (Morph No. LI.376.2.1)
