CASTLE HILL

Trapezoidal Mediaeval moat, altered in the Post-Mediaeval, possibly during the Civil War, with evidence of turrets in the angles. The island tapers from 80m to 60m and is 75m wide. The steep-sided moat is between 12m and 18m wide , up tp 2.0m deep, and dry. The level interior is surrounded on all but the North-West side by a rampart, between 8m and 10m wide and up tp 1.5m high. At each corner the rampart splays outwards forming platforms which may have provided gun emplacements.
