HUNSTANTON HALL

DESCRIPTION + /

Country house incorporating a moated manor house possibly mid 14th century in origin. The earliest substantial part of the house is a large two storey brick gatehouse possibly built in the late 15th century. In 1578 Sir Nicholas le Strange is reputed to have built a hall range at the west side of the courtyard, this was totally destroyed by fire in the 1850s. The only remnant of the hall range is the porch which was added to it in 1618. This now stands alone in the centre of the quadrangle. In 1620 there was piecemeal reconstruction of the house. In 1935 a range was added to the north side of the house and in 1873 a large block was added n the north west corner of the site. Afire in 1947 or 1950 gutted the entire north and north east wings of the house.
