DESCRIPTION

Medieval moat with ruins of a building posasibly the chapel recorded in 1548 as being half a mile from the church. The moat is 12-15m wide and 1m deep and encloses a platform 40m by 33m. The ruins are constructed of flint and define a building 19m long and 5m wide, standing up to 0.7m heigh. Adjoining the southern arm of the moat is a second enclosed area possibly forming an outer yard or Garden 46m by 40m. There are also depressions which may be the remains of ponds. Scheduled.

[TF94223905] CHAPEL [NR] (rems. of) MOAT [NR] (1)

Some pieces of old wall surrounded by the track of an old moat
and supposed to be the remains of an ancient Chapel of Ease. (2)

This chapel existed after the Dissolution when, in 1548 it is
stated that its founder and purpose was unknown, but that the
'master' at that time was Francis Bedingfield. (3)

Remains of this parochial chapel can still be seen. (4)

The walling is comprised of coursed flint, oriented N-S, and
forms the inner wall of the moat. An inset portion may be the
remains of a bascule or drawbridge wall. Immediately adjacent
are traces of inner rooms.

It seems unlikely that this was purely a chapel, more probably
there was originally a domestic chapel to a moated residence.
