DESCRIPTION

House. Originally the Manor House of Much Hadham and from before the Conquest until 1647 a residence of the Bishops of London. Early 16th century and later periods. Red brick casing to timber frame structure. Old tile roof. 2 storeys and attics. Original house was an East-West hall range with cross wing on West. This cross wing was refronted in mid 18th century.

(TL 43051972) The Palace (NAT) (1)

Between the 10th and 18th cents the site was occupied by a
residence of the Bishops of London. The present house is of the
16th cent and possesses traces of a large 16th cent hall. It
also contains a 17th cent brick casing to an earlier timber
framed building, probably of the 15th cent. Partly rebuilt
after a fire in the 18th cent and a great deal altered, it is
now adapted as flats. (2-3)

"The foundations of what was probably a still older house can
be traced on the front lawn whenever a dry spell occurs". (4)

Basically as described, 'The Palace' has much late addition and
is not outstanding.

No trace was found of foundation patching on the front lawn, but
one of the occupiers believes these patch marks to be the
outline of a tennis court which once existed in this area. (5)
