(TL 5220 2421) Stansted Hall (NR) (site of). (1)

Stansted Hall was described in a survey of 1553 as a quadrangular brick building enclosing a courtyard, and surrounded by a moat "forty-four poles in circumference". The gatehouse was on the southern side, two-storeys high and flanked with large projecting turrets.

The house stood in a park, four miles in circumference, of 787 acres.

Apart from part of the kitchen and offices converted into a farmhouse nothing remains of the original building. (2)

Stansted Hall; one range of a large circa 16th C building remains, though to the N are the fragmentary foundations of another range, originally no doubt across a courtyard. (3)

There are no remains of the early Stansted Hall, the 16th C range mentioned by Wright and Pevsner cannot be located; it is presumably demolished and the present hall dates from late 19th/early 20th centuries. The site as shown on OS 6" is verified by reference to 18th C maps. (a) (b) (4)

Stansted was a demesne manor of the Earls of Arundel who had a hunting lodge here in the 12th century. Following Earl William's death in 1176, the lands reverted to the King, who hunted there with falcons in 1177. The manor ereverted to the earls in 1216. (5)
