Probable moated mill mound. Quaker burials of 17th/18th century date found during excavations.

(TL 69522042) Mound (NAT) (1)

A small moated mound at Bannister Green known as 'Quakers' Mount' (2) and 'Mill Hill (3)', considered to be a barrow by French (4) and a windmill mound by RCHM (5). The parish registers record Quaker burials at Quakers' Mount, particularly in 1695 to 1698 and 1732. Excavations by Felsted Bury School in 1946/7 located `secondary' burials in wooden coffins dated 17th and 18th century, but no central burial (5). (2-5)

An artificial mound in the grounds of Mill Cottage, 16.2m by 10.6m and 3.5m high with a flat top; probably originally circular, with a wet moat on the west side going half way round. (6)

Cottage re-named Quaker Mount - mound surveyed. (7)

Quakers Mount; name verified. This feature is as described, and takes advantage of an exposed position in an otherwise level area. Its appearance and shape is similar to windmill steads in this region, the `tail' of the mound at its E end and the surrounding shallow ditch being typical.
Apparently disused by the 17th century, and used as a Quaker Burial Ground; the appearance and tithe name `Mill Hill' (3) point to its probable origin.
