DESCRIPTION

Moated fortified manor house, built circa 1260-90 and altered circa 1569 and in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ground floor of the house is rib-vaulted and the first floor contains a chapel. A wing added to the south west corner, probably in the 16th century, was later demolished. This house represents one of the earliest uses of home made brick in England. Now in use as a private museum.

Wenham Castle, formerly Little Wenham Hall, is a two-storeyed fortified brick manor house of L-shaped plan, built circa 1270-80 with alterations in the 16th century. A chapel is situated on the first or entrance floor and the ground floor or basement is rib-vaulted, Gde 1. (2-3)

Wenham Castle is unoccupied but is in an excellent state of preservation. The moat is waterfilled and in good condition. Published 1:2500 correct. Recently photographed by MPBW (See Illust). (4)
