Earthwork complex representing the Manor of Preston. Excavations have identified features including a chapel, droveroad, fishpond and bakehouse, 12th-14th century pottery also recovered.

[TQ 23585724] Preston Hawe [T.I.]

A complex of earthworks at Preston Hawe, representing the
Medieval Manor of Preston was excavated by B.H. Taylor during
1952-4.

Five manorial buildings, including two successive halls
antedated by a chapel, two guard-points, cattle compounds,
seven courtyards, a fish pond, drove-roads, a pit (probably a
catchment well) and a probable bakehouse were uncovered.
Finds include late 12th to 14th c. pottery.

[Site mainly covered by a new housing estate].

The sole remaining features are (i) a tree-covered mound at
TQ 23635723, 14.0m in diameter, 1.0m high, encircled by a weak
ditch, and with a hollow way south of it, both within an area
of rough pasture. A mutilated mound at TQ 23665178, 17.0m in
diameter, 1.5m high, situated within a private garden. The
landowner stated that the mound was dug into in 1954, but
nothing was found.
