DIANAS DYKE

DESCRIPTION + /

A ditch situated in Nonsuch Park, close to the site of Nonsuch Palace. It measures 180 metres in length, between 9 and 14 metres in width and up to 2 metres in depth. Due to its proximity to Nonsuch Palace, the ditch is thought to be contemporary in date. It is thought that it was used as a drain and sump in times of flooding, instances which are well-documented. However, its regular form and alignment suggests that it may have also an ornamental aspect, such as a garden canal. It is also the traditional site of a 16th century bathing pool. The ditch was surveyed by RCHME field staff as part of the Nonsuch Park Survey conducted between 1993-95.
