[TQ 31464419] Burstow Lodge [TI] MOAT [GT]. (1)

Burstow Lodge, timber house of two storeys built on a moated site
in the early 14thc., with two-bay open hall, two-storey cross wing
and lower end.
Chimney and floor inserted in hall c.1600 and refronted and
enlarged in the 19thc. Classed as a building of outstanding
importance.

Burstow Lodge, as described by Authority 2, is undergoing extensive
alterations. Although of little architectural interest (see GP's,
AO/65/85/2-3) most of the internal details are being retained.

The enclosing rectangular homestead moat is waterfilled and in
good condition.
Published 1/2500 survey correct.

The name suggests it was the lodge of the ancient deer park of
Burstow, belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury (a) no traces
of which were found during fieldwork. (3)
