DESCRIPTION

Mainly 16th century farmhouse, originally part of a larger complex. One source suggests that the ruinous south wing of the house was built as a pele tower in the 14th century. The RCHME record, however, dates it to the early 16th century. The remainder of the house is mid and late 16th century in date, with later alterations. The two storeyed house is irregular in plan, and built of stone rubble with a slate roof.

The ruins of the 14th century pele-tower at Nether Levens Hall (SD 48858517) and several yards of the defensive curtain wall which once enclosed it, are visible to the S. of the main building which is of 16th-17thc. (1)

RCHM describes the above 'Pele Tower' merely as part of the ruined south wing of Nether Levens, dating it to early 16th.c. No mention of a pele. (cf.plan in (1)). (2)
