MONUMENT NO. 419954

DESCRIPTION + /

An earthwork on Judd's Hill was described at the end of the 18th century and its supposed identification as the Roman DUROLEVUM discussed. Field work in 1922 suggested it was not a Roman camp but lynchets, although a Roman date continued to be stated in various sources. The work was largely destroyed in 1874. There was certainly an enclosure on Judd's Hill, although it was not necessarily Roman. Such dating was possibly influenced by the amount of Roman material found in the area. Field investigation in 1959 noted that banks around Syndale Hall appeared to be of relatively recent character and probably connected with 18th century landscaping.
