The site of a manor house and the extant remains of a late 14th century tithe barn. A bishop's palace and prison are alleged to have stood in an area now covered by lawn.

The barn at Cargoll Farm is probably early 16th century "Rubble
with thatched roof. Buttresses on both sides. Arched collar braced
roof with wind braces and arched intermediates". Grade II (House
not listed) (2)

Cargoll: A large episcopal manor purchased in 1269 and held
by the Bishops of Exeter until 1804. In 1700 it comprised 5856
acres. The manor house was often used by the bishops in the 13th
and 14th centuries, though no record can be found for a chapel.
Tonkin noted from the ruins that it had been a large place and
recorded a large prison, then scarcely used, and a large barn. The
rest was but a sorry village of three or four houses. Today the
tithe barn alone remains, with buttresses and a wagon roof. (3)

The present farmhouse at Cargoll is not outstanding, and nothing is
known about the site of the Palace (4) which is now under the
front lawn.

The tithe barn is generally in a good state of preservation
although a number of modern windows have been added. The roofing
timbers are still intact, but the thatch has been replaced by
galavanised sheeting. See GP.

Tonkin recorded that there was a large prison and a large barn,
but the OS 25" shows the remains of the prison at SW 81945638 which
is the position of the tithe barn; nothing is now known about
the site of the prison. (5)
