(SX 66748433) Cairn Circle and Cist (NR). (1)

Barrow in Thornworthy Intake, excavated by Samuel Slade in
1878. It was about 30ft in diameter by 4-5ft high, and contained a
central cist about 4ft by 2ft by 2ft deep approximately 1 1/2 ft below the surface. The cist, consisting of four stones forming a rough
oblong and covered by a fifth stone, contained earth and one
certain flint implement and another probable one. A few feet to
the south east at a slightly lower level a second cist was
uncovered. This was similar to the first; but slightly smaller.
Unfortunately it was vandalised before being investigated, but
examination of the thrown-out material yielded fragments of an
urn and two flint implements. The smaller cist is now in Torquay
Museum; the other was left in situ. (2-3)
