CARISBROOKE CASTLE

Medieval castle where excavations have uncovered the remains of probable Late Saxon defences, (possible burh), a 6th century Saxon cemetery and a Norman ringwork. Earthwork remains of a Norman motte and bailey. There is no evidence of a Roman fort. The castle has buildings of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and foundations of the 11th and 12th centuries. Important bastion-traced artillery fort of 1588-1602. The ruins were considerably restored in the 19th century. The chapel was rebuilt in 1904-5. Scheduled and listed.
