CANTERBURY

Medieval town. Canterbury is mentioned in 1086 as a city in which the king had Sake and Soke over 212 burgesses and rent from 51 others. From 1294 onwards Canterbury was taxed as a city. The major monuments include the cathedral Priory (TR 15 NE 125) and St Augustine's Abbey (TR 15 NE 124).
