(SE 46738463) Howe Hill (NAT) Motte (NR) (1)

A small motte lies 150 yards S of Felixkirk church with the site of a possible bailey occupied by the vicarage garden to the south. Roads cutting into the mound on three sides have destroyed all traces of a ditch and counterscarp bank. The site has every appearance of a motte and bailey castle but the mutilations make it impossible to be entirely certain. (2)

A motte situated on a spur of high ground some 115.0m ASL. The mound has a maximum height of 4.0m, but because of mutilation, see 2, it is difficult to identify its original limits. The maximum diameter is now 25.0m. The possible bailey, to the S, occupies an area of level ground on the spur, bounded on the W by a steep slope about 5.0m high. No earthworks could be found. On the E a road cutting with a max depth of 5.0m has destroyed any remains of former perimeter features. To the S the land merges into a natural hill ridge and modern development has destroyed any trace of archaeological features.
Motte surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. (3)

SE 4673 8462. A bowl barrow at Howe Hill 130m SSW of St Felix's Church. Scheduled RSM No 20460. The barrow is 10m in diameter and about 1.5m in height. Any quarry ditch has been infilled over the years, the ditch is estimated by comparison with known examples to be about 2m wide, thus giving the monument a total diameter of 14m. Some recent maps refer to the barrow as a motte, but this description is now considered erroneous. (4)
