WILTON HALL

DESCRIPTION + /

Site of fortified manor house, granted a licence to crenellate in 1335. The site was excavated in 1975, revealing evidence of occupation from the 12th century or earlier. The moat which surrounded the house is roughly circular, with an outer bank standing up to 2 metres high. Aerial photographs reveal that the moat is itself enclosed on at least three sides by a larger, rectangular enclosure. Earthwork remains of ridge and furrow are visible to the south and west of the site.
