Chester city wall, the north and east walls follow the Roman fortress walls; their Medieval extension to the south and west appears to have takem place before 1121 AD. The walls were restored between 1701 and 1708 and at later periods.

City Walls [GT] (1)

Most of the northern and eastern walls of Chester upon the Roman
foundations. The date of the extension south and west is not
positively known, but took place prior to 1121-9, when Ship Gate is
mentioned in a Charter. They have been frequently repaired (2)(3).

The wall appears to have been extensively restored in 1701-08 and at
later periods, but it is probable that such restorations incorporated
the core of the original wall.
Breaks in the wall are of a minor nature except from SJ 4053 6573 to
SJ 4066 6582 where there is no trace.
The wall is surmounted by a modern pathway which is unbroken except
for the portion referred to.

The northern wall was breached in 1965 for 38.0m during the
construction of a ring road at SJ 4021 6661. It has been replaced by
a footbridge. Otherwise no change since report of 29 7 64. (6)
