CASTLE HILL

A natural feature which, it has been suggested, may have been adapted as a fortification The nearby name of Wharmadine Lane to the south may be of some importance, possibly deriving from the Old English term for 'enclosed settlement'. Aerial photographs show an unusual linear feature leading north-eastwards away from the site at least as far as the former railway line. This latter feature is unusual in that it appears to be made up of a succession of rectangular cropmarks, and may also be a natural geological feature.
