DESCRIPTION

Medieval moated site and associated fishponds surviving as earthworks. Stone foundations have been recorded on the moated island. This site was the ancestral home of the Roos family who built Helmsley Castle.

Condition of moat not very good. Slopes 3 to 4 feet high. Marshy and overgrown, not water-filled. (3)

TA 2904 2945. Roos Castle moated site & associated fishponds.

Scheduled RSM No 21197. A sub-rectangular central island surrounded by a single moat and two fishponds: one within the moat, one external to it. The island is 100m x 70m with an internal bank along its N edge 1m high and 5m wide. A fishpond 15m x 7m x 1.5m extends into the island on its E edge. The fishpond opens into the moat at its E end. Past stock poaching on the island has uncovered structural remains. The N arm of the moat remains waterlogged. It is 45m x 12m x 3m deep and has been remodelled and retained as a pond. The NE and NW corners of the moat are infilled, isolating the N arm and creating the pond. The S, W and E arms are 15m wide by 1.5m to 1.75m deep. The SW corner has been partially infilled. An earthen bank 1m high and 7m wide lies outside the W arm, enclosing the fishpond to the S of the moat, which is 40m x 15m x 0.3m deep. The moat was the ancestral home of the Roos family, who built Helmsley Castle. (5)
